Guarding the Spark feels like a confrontation between tremendous force and something small but essential that must survive. The painting surges around two large, eye-like openings, creating an immediate sense of presence. Yet the brightest moments are not the largest forms. They are the small flashes of yellow and gold held within the surrounding movement—as though something precious is being protected inside all that intensity.

Brilliant red and crimson dominate the left and lower portions of the painting, moving through burgundy and nearly black passages. Deep blue, indigo, violet, and lavender create the cooler counterforce, while streaks of orange, gold, yellow, pale pink, and white ignite individual areas. The contrast makes the color appear illuminated from within rather than evenly spread across the canvas.

The strokes curve around the darker openings and sweep toward the center, where opposing movements seem to meet. There is strength here, but also vigilance. The painting does not feel like uncontrolled fire; it feels alert—as though all of that energy has a purpose.

And somewhere within it is the spark: small in relation to everything surrounding it, yet powerful enough to command the entire painting. Guarding the Spark leaves the viewer to decide what that spark represents and why it matters enough to protect.
